Curriculum Intent
At St Patrick and St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, our curriculum is rooted in our mission to “Let your light shine.” We believe every child is created by God with unique gifts and limitless potential. Our purpose is to nurture these gifts so that each pupil grows in confidence, wisdom and compassion, enabling their light to shine brightly in our school, our community and God’s world.
In harmony with the Archdiocese of Birmingham’s mission—“Forming Christ‑centred pilgrims of hope with kind hearts, questioning minds, a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for justice”—our curriculum is designed to shape pupils who are spiritually grounded, intellectually curious and morally courageous. We want every child to develop a deep sense of belonging, hope and purpose, and to recognise their call to serve others.
Central to our approach is a commitment to Quality First Teaching for all. This ensures every pupil consistently receives high‑quality instruction, adaptive teaching and rich learning experiences that enable them to access the full curriculum and achieve success. Through this, we maintain high ambition for all learners—including those with SEND, those who are disadvantaged and those with additional barriers—and create a classroom culture where every child is supported to thrive.
Our curriculum is intentionally inclusive, ambitious and equitable, ensuring that every pupil—regardless of starting point, background or need—can access, participate in and succeed within a rich and broad education. Through carefully-sequenced learning, adaptive teaching and a strong foundation of pastoral care, we remove barriers and provide the support needed so that all children can flourish.
We aim to:
- Form kind hearts by teaching pupils to act with empathy, forgiveness, respect and love, guided by the values of Catholic Social Teaching.
- Develop questioning minds by fostering curiosity, critical thinking, problem‑solving and a genuine love of learning across all subjects.
- Inspire a thirst for knowledge through an ambitious, knowledge‑rich curriculum that builds deep understanding and prepares pupils for the next stage of their journey.
- Nurture a hunger for justice by helping pupils recognise inequality, celebrate diversity and become advocates for fairness, dignity and the common good.
- Let every child’s light shine by celebrating their strengths, encouraging resilience and providing opportunities for leadership, creativity and personal growth.
Learning at St Patrick and St Edmund’s is joyful, purposeful and transformational. Children experience a curriculum that connects faith, knowledge and action; that honours their heritage and community; and that equips them to be hopeful, confident and compassionate disciples of Christ.
Through our curriculum, we strive to develop pupils who not only achieve well academically, but who also shine with integrity, faith, courage and a commitment to making the world a better place.
